Position SummaryThe Social Worker is responsible for modeling the 3 Company values of Compassion, Integrity, and Excellence, and for promoting the Hospice Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of success as the foundation. S/he is responsible for upholding the Code of Ethical Conduct and for promoting positive working relationships within the Program, between the Program and other Company departments, and between the Program and all external stakeholders. The Social Worker provides preventive, educational, and evaluative and treatment services to meet the psychosocial needs of patients and their families, to help them improve, restore, and maintain their maximum level of coping. The Social Worker utilizes community resources and the interdisciplinary team to aid in this process. S/he is responsible for applying the rules and regulations of state and federal regulatory agencies and other certified agencies.The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for modeling the 3 Company values of Compassion, Integrity, and Excellence, and for promoting the Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of success as the foundation. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, selecting, training, supervising, and retaining volunteers to adequately support volunteer operations and to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. He/she will ensure the coordination of patient and family needs for volunteer services and will oversee the development and implementation of the plan of care to meet those needs. S/he is responsible for applying the rules and regulations of state and federal regulatory agencies and other certified agencies.Principal Accountabilities Regulatory Compliance Pillar of Success:

  • Articulates the regulatory framework governing the role of the Volunteer Coordinator and Volunteers (federal and state, if applicable).
  • Reads and incorporates into practice the policies and procedures for Compassus in the provision of care and services to hospice patients.
  • Participates as a member of the IDT, including development and implementation of the plan of care.
  • Promotes the use of volunteers as an intervention to support patient care needs.
  • Actively recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and retains volunteers to support the administrative and patient care needs of the program and Compassus.
  • Adheres to common human resource policies in recruitment and selection processes.
  • Ensures prospective volunteers are interviewed and complete all mandated background and health screenings prior to being offered a position as a volunteer.
  • Performs initial and ongoing competency evaluations to verify training and support needs.
  • Maintains records of all recruitment and retention activities.
  • Maintains accurate record of volunteer utilization as a percentage of overall patient care hours as mandated by regulations.Colleagues Pillar of Success

    • Effectively communicates patient and family needs to IDT.
    • Provides education about volunteer services and role of the volunteer to members of the IDT.

    • Recognizes issues or concerns and escalates appropriately.
    • Prepares reports, in-services, and other documents to demonstrate the value and effectiveness of the volunteer program as requested.

      • Delivers at least 4 in-services per year for active volunteers.
      • Manages volunteer services through accountable awareness of volunteer utilization, documentation and plan of care involvement.

        • Attends and participates in community events, promoting Compassus as a place to volunteer.
        • Develops and performs public service announcements regarding hospice volunteerism.
        • Promotes hospice philosophy and the integral role of volunteers to support patients.

            • Seeks resources which maximize outcomes.Supervisory ResponsibilitiesThe Volunteer Coordinator directly supervises volunteers. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training volunteers; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining volunteers; addressing complaints and resolving problems.Knowledge and SkillsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Education and/or ExperienceAs Social Worker;(A) Has a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from a school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (preferred); or(B) Has a baccalaureate degree in social work from an institution accredited by the Council on Social Work Education; or a baccalaureate degree in psychology, sociology, or other field related to social work; and has 1 year of social work experience in a healthcare setting and is supervised by an MSW; or(C) Has a baccalaureate degree from a school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, is employed by the Hospice Compassus before December 2, 2008, and is not required to be supervised by an MSW.State specific requirements:
              • Alabama - Minimum requirement of BSW and licensure in the state of Alabama
              • California - Minimum requirement of MSW and clinical experience relevant to the psychosocial needs of patients and families; an individual with a BSW is not qualified as a social worker in California
              • Colorado - Minimum requirement of BSW from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, Master's degree preferred (MSW)
              • Connecticut - Minimum requirement of MSW from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education; an individual with a BSW is not qualified as a social worker in Connecticut
              • Louisiana - MSW from an accredited school of social work AND current, valid licensure as a SW in the state (LMSW), AND has 1 year of experience in health care with documented clinical experience appropriate to the counseling and casework needs of the terminally ill
              • Massachusetts - Social Worker means an individual who is currently licensed to practice social work under the licensure categories of Licensed Independent Practitioner of Clinical Social Work, or Licensed Certified Social Worker or Licensed Social Worker.
              • Michigan - Licensure required in order to be titled Social Worker.
              • Mississippi - Masters' Degree from a school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and at least one year of documented clinical experience appropriate to the counseling and casework needs of the terminally ill
              • Missouri - A social worker must have at least a bachelor's degree in Social Work from an accredited school of social work
              • New Hampshire - Masters' degree from a graduate school of social work OR a bachelor's degree in a related health or human services field, with at least 2 years' experience as a social worker and the individual has established a consultative relationship with a masters' prepared social worker
              • New Jersey - "Social worker" means a person whom:
                • The State Board of Social Work Examiners licenses as a Licensed Social Worker or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker pursuant to N.J.A.C. 13:44G; and
                • Has either:
                  • Nine hundred hours of social work experience in a health care setting as part of the master's degree curriculum of a social work internship; or
                  • One year of social work experience in a health care setting after licensure as a social worker.
                  • New Mexico - Licensure is required, BSW is minimum education required but must be supervised by MSW, MSW is preferred education for hospice social worker
                  • Ohio - Licensure required
                  • Oklahoma - Licensure required in order to be titled Social Worker
                  • South Carolina - Licensure required
                  • Texas - active licensure in the state of Texas as a master social worker (MSW) and one year of social work experience in a health care setting; or active licensure in the state of Texas as a baccalaureate social worker, one year of social work experience in a health care setting, and if employed by Compassus after December 2, 2008, must be supervised by a qualified MSW.
                  • Wisconsin - minimum of BSW from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and certification by the state of Wisconsin
                  • West Virginia - minimum of BSW and licensure according to education level (LSW = BSW + license, LMSW = MSW + license, LCSW = MSW + practice hours + license)As Volunteer Coordinator;Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. College degree preferred. Experience in Social Services, Human Services, Resource Management or related field is helpful; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience managing volunteer services or non-profit organization is a plus.Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.Language SkillsAbility to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to volunteers, public, colleagues, patients and families of patients.Reasoning AbilityAbility to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.Computer SkillsTo perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite software. Previous experience in use of an electronic medical record is helpful.Other QualificationsStrong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, communication and teaching skills with presentation experience. Creativity in preparing and making presentations. Must be of high integrity including maintenance of confidential information including all personnel and patient records. Ability to work a flexible schedule, to include some evenings and weekends. Must be able to travel frequently.Certifications, Licenses and RegistrationsMust have a valid driver's license and auto liability insurance.Other Skills and AbilitiesAbility to understand, read, write, and speak English. Articulates and embraces hospice philosophy. Must be able to tend the geriatric and the terminally ill. Ability to communicate with the families of patients.
